Above is a picture of what I would like my future to look like. I like the idea of having the room laid out like this for a couple of reasons. One reason is that the room is permanently set up like a community circle. After experiencing a community circle, first hand, I knew that I would love to have my future classroom community have that same type of atmosphere. Secondly, it makes the children feel equal to the teacher by the way the teacher desk is positioned within the room. The teacher is included with student activity and never secluded. There is a reason behind the positioning of the kidney table as well as the computer and that reason arises during station work. If a teacher is working with a group at the kidney table, and there is a group at the computers, the teacher can easily look up to make sure that the students are focused on the work and not off task. I like the idea of bean bag chairs as well as a cushioned chair in the back for reading purposes, however, throughout the year the teacher may notice that student's work better sitting in those chairs, and if that is the case, the chairs could be used for students to complete work.
Student work will be hung up all around the room. The idea of idolizing their hard work can go a long way. Students take pride in their work and when they see their work displayed for everyone to see, they will more than likely want to see more of their work up, leading to them trying to giving maximum effort in class. I really think highly of the idea of students sitting together, in groups. I really like collaboration between peers and I believe that it has a positive impact on students. With tables being utilized, instead of individual desks, students can collaborate when prompted too, however, if the teacher wants to separate students to complete individual, it can easily be done by allowing the students to move around the room and seaparte that way. Again, the major reason for creating a room like this is to build a strong classroom community. This plan allows the students and teacher to communicate easily with ease. As mentioned above, there will be a station for computers in my future classroom, but something that is not pictured, that I will have will be laptops or tablets. Technology is growing rapidly, which leads to its importance to grow as well. Each student will be assigned one of these portable devices, and that will be their device for that year. It has to stay in the classroom, but they will use it whenever there is an assignment that requires them to work over a period of time. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.2.6
The square rug is where the morning greeting will take place. That is where the students will come and sit every morning prior to the start of class. Students will sit around the perimeter of the rug and wait for instructions on the greeting. Every morning greeting will be different, some will require students to move around the room, and others will ask for the students to stay on the rug. After the morning greeting, the students will gather back on the rug for the teacher to go over the class schedule for the day. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.2.6
